Alum is the most commonly used, and safest, mordant in the natural dyeing world. The Japanese commonly use a baked version of aluminum potassium sulfate. They also use it in making sweets and breads. In the US it is the most commonly used active ingredient in body deodorant. It's considered safe unless you snort it.
