Getting to Covelo

   Covelo is nestled in the Yolla Bolly mountains of Mendocino County in Northern CA. There is no public transportation all the way out to our valley.

Flying

There are three international airports and one regional airport to consider flying into.

San Francisco International, Oakland International, and Sacramento International airports are all just about the same distance from my studio. It may be easier to find flights into SFO and Oakland, but Sacramento is smaller, easier to navigate, and the drive through Lake County is a bit more relaxed than driving through the urban areas of highway 101. Regardless which one you choose, it is about a four-hour drive.

   The regional airport is Charles M Schulz / Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa, which is about a 2.5 hour drive.

Driving

from the south:

Sacramento on HWY 5, north to Williams and head west on HWY 20  toward Lake County/Ukiah, north on HWY 101 past Willits and then turn right (east) on HWY 162 (Covelo/Round Valley). Keep going about forty-five minutes and you'll arrive in the town of Covelo. Turn left on Greeley,  continue one block - at stop sign look  kitty corner across street. The big building is my studio. Arrivals and Departures

the Katazome class, six days of instruction, August 17-22, Monday through Saturday
   For those of you traveling long distances, or if you just want to get settled in early, you're more than welcome to arrive on Sunday, August 16, the day before the first session, and stay the night. Your rooms will be ready by three or four o'clock. There is no extra charge for this. I will, however, be busy with blackberry festival details, getting your rooms in order, and preparing for class, so you'll be on your own for dinner that night. There should be plenty of delicious options at the festival. If you arrive late, I'll certainly be able to scare up something for you, so please don't worry.
   With the festival ongoing, it may be a bit difficult to find parking close by on Sunday. Park where you can, find me, and we can arrange to get your luggage in. You may repark in my yard once folks have cleared out.
   You are also welcome to stay over the last night of instruction and head out before noon on Sunday, August 23.

Lodging and Meals

Your rooms are included in the fee you paid. I'll be discussing your room situation with each of you individually over the course of the next week or so. I gather from your responses that no one has any special needs, but if something comes up please let me know ASAP and I'll certainly do what I can to accommodate you.

   We have a very small farmers market across the street in the walnut grove on Fridays. We have wonderful baked breads, local meats and cheeses, and top quality organic produce grown locally. I'll be pulling mostly from these sources for my cooking. We'll be having a range of Asian, Russian, and American dishes. No packaged food, all will be prepared here. There will be a couple of nights of communal cooking for those who would like to pitch in.

   If you have any special dietary needs or food allergies, now is the time to let me know.

Weather and Dress, Etc.

August temps in Covelo are rather high, often reaching 100º and a little over, dropping to the fifties at night. We have very low humidity. Around 3:00 each afternoon a cooling breeze comes in from the coast. My studio is not air conditioned, but being a massive old building, our work area will generally run around twenty degrees or more cooler than it is outside. You'll also have the option of working outside, if you prefer.

   Bring light weight clothes and plan on layering. A wide-brimmed hat is a good idea. You may want an apron, although the process is not messy. Mornings can feel quite cool in our workspace, so a sweater or somesuch is a good idea. You will have access to a washing machine and dryer, although anything hung outside is normally dry within a half hour.

   Each room will have access to a small kitchen in case you prefer to prepare your own food, or have items to store in the fridge.

   We have a clinic on the reservation, but if you have need of any medications, plan on bringing them with you. We have a largish grocery store that will carry other basic needs, if something comes up.

Access to the Inside and Outside World

I have optical cable internet, with a router on each floor. The access name is sakasajinsei and the password is BlueFrogs2

I will have a large screen iMac available on each floor for you to use. We have a wonderful - if small - public library right next door. It's won many awards such as Best Little Library in America.

   An IGA grocery store is only a five-minute walk away and fairly large for a community this size. We have no restaurants in town, but do have a couple of delicious food wagons within a three minute walk and a coffee shop connected to the library. The bank (TriCounties) and Post Office are within a three to four minute walk.

Mornings and Evenings

Class will begin at roughly 9:00 in the morning and run until 5:00. After which the studio will be closed down for the day.

   I'm an early riser - up and about by 5:30. Breakfast should be available starting around 7:30.

   You will have free time after class to wind down and will be welcome to explore my library of books and textiles. You'll be welcome to photograph and copy 'till your heart's content.
