Exploring Japanese Textiles with John Marshall
Welcome to my world of Japanese textiles…
My earliest memories are of color and texture. I was just a toddler when Dad put
together a collection of fabric samples, abundantly tactile and vibrantly hued,
bound it with strong thread, and gave it to me as a toy. It was chew-proof and
washer-safe. Later, growing up in a small Japanese American community in
California, I was regularly exposed to exotic textile colors and patterns,
further fueling my interests. I was able to advance my studies when, at
seventeen, I moved to Japan and immersed myself in the language and culture of
my dreams.
It is my hope that I will be able to share with you not only the knowledge I
have gained over the past fifty years of researching and practicing these arts,
but also my love for the pure joy this beauty brings.
