A suribachi is a large bowl in which paste is blended. Most often with a warm brown glaze on the outside, its unglazed inner wall has a series of grooves to help break up any suribachi and surikogi lumps in the paste while stirring. The surikogi (or suribou) is the stick with which the paste is mixed.
HARITE

available through special order
however, I recommend making your own-
it's actually pretty easy!!
Harite are the stretcher clamps, of
which two are needed. These are clamped to the ends of the cloth,
parallel to the warp, and pulled tight with rope between two posts.
Shinshi are sticks of bamboo with a needle extending at each end.
The shinshi are used to help stretch the fabric out flat and are
also placed parallel to the warp, about every six to eighteen
inches.

traditional set up with harite and shinshi
SHINSHI
several sizes available-see price list
I don't recommend trying to make your own.
When the fabric is pulled taught with the harite, narrow mountains and valleys may form across the entire length of the fabric, allowing the dye to puddle. Shinshi are used to stretch the fabric selvage to selvage, thus flattening them and giving a very even, taught surface upon which to work.
HERA

several sizes available (as measured
across widest part of blade):
see price list
A hera is the spatula used to push the paste through the stencil.
Nyuubachi is the porcelain mortar and pestle used to help grind and mix the pigments. Available through scientific supply stores, Cost Plus, IKEA, & restuarant supply stores.

The traditional cutting mat is a very smooth, virtually grainless board. Most amatuer stencil cutters find it much easier to use a self-healing vinyl cutting mat.
