GENERAL OUTLINE

This lively and compact course is designed as an intensive introduction to the traditional arts of katazome and tsutsugaki, Japanese paste-resist dyeing. An abundance antique and contemporary samples will be presented to help participants understand the history and development of this versatile process. In addition,participants will be guided through the entire process of dyeing silk in the ancient Japanese traditions. The course includes making our own natural dyes (synthetic dyes will also work), our own resist from rice and bran, carving stencils from hand made mulberry paper, and much, much more. Each participant will be able to leave with a completed length of silk suitable for clothing, quilts, or wall hangings.

MATERIALS FEE: $140.00. This includes silk, paste, stencil materials, dyes and all other consumable materials required. In addition, it includes the use of many of the artist's stencils, brushes, stretching equipment, and so on. Participants will also have access to a great many reference materials.
